On the 10th anniversary of the establishment of JCIC-Heritage “The Future that Cultural Heritage Leads to”

Japan

2016 marks the tenth anniversary of Japan Consortium for International Cooperation in Cultural Heritage (JCIC-Heritage). Ever since its establishment in the wake of the destruction of the Buddhas of Bamiyan by the Taliban, JCIC-Heritage has supported the conservation and utilization of cultural heritage by creating a network of national and international cooperation. Through cultural heritage, it has strived to foster world peace by promoting the coexistence and mutual understanding between different cultures. However, there is no question that in recent years, issues such as environmental degradation, frequent natural disasters and armed conflicts are threatening the conservation and utilization of cultural heritage more than ever before. The time has come to rethink the future prospects of the contribution by JCIC-Heritage and Japan.

In this symposium, we aim to shape the future vision of Japan’s international cooperation for cultural heritage by discussing the possibilities for cooperation and what should be done to carry them out.

Also, on Monday, September 26, a day after the symposium, discussion speaker Mr. Nyunt Han (Senior Researcher, SEAMEO SPAFA) who is invited by the Japan Foundation Asia Center will speak at a special lecture session. Mr. Han will be speaking on his vast knowledge of safeguarding cultural heritage in Myanmar, a topic with which he is extremely familiar.
